Jason Costigan is your CanDo Member for Whitsunday.
Born and raised in Mackay, Jason is a fiercely proud North Queenslander and a fifth-generation local who has lived at both ends of the electorate – from Mackay’s northside in the south to the canefields of Strathdickie in the north.
A print and TV journalist by profession, Jason began his career as a 17-year-old out of school in Bowen in 1989 and has worked extensively in North Queensland media circles ever since.
In fact, in regional communities from Gladstone to Cairns, he has good name recognition thanks to his work as a local TV news presenter and rugby league commentator, having broadcast both NRL and international league on Fox Sports for the past decade and in more recent times, calling the Cowboys’ games on commercial radio.
While forging a name for himself as a colourful sports broadcaster, Jason became active in politics and between 2001 and 2007, he worked for three Federal Parliamentarians, including NQ-based Senator Ian Macdonald and Howard Government Minister, Senator George Brandis SC.
After serving Senator Macdonald as media adviser, in addition to co-ordinating the Senate campaign in Queensland, Jason was invited by Senator Brandis, then Minister for the Arts and Sport, to join his Ministerial staff as sports adviser, as well as advising the Minister on regional affairs.
Jason, now aged 40, is a single father of two young girls, Brianna (11) and Bridie (6), with Brianna living with him on a small rural property near Bloomsbury, about 90 kilometres north of Mackay, and attending St Catherine’s School in Proserpine.
