Queensland residents interested in learning CPR skills to save lives have been urged to contact the Queensland Ambulance Service and their Local Ambulance Committees.

LNP emergency services spokesman Ted Malone said despite the best efforts of the Bligh Labor government to kill-off the ‘CPR for Life’ program early this year by axing funding and QAS support staff, the program was still alive and gaining strength every day.

"CPR volunteers, community leaders and dedicated ambulance staff were shocked and dismayed when the Bligh government and Minister Roberts axed the funding and staff positions for the CPR for Life program early this year," Mr Malone said.

"But the program has been handed back to Local Ambulance Committees and many are back offering CPR courses.

"At one time the CPR for Life program had over 800 peer trainers across Queensland.

"Sadly, many gave it away when the Bligh government divested itself of the program, but now some 80 trainers are back running courses and they and anyone else interested in the program need all the encouragement we can give them."

Mr Malone said the axing of the program by the Bligh government was unbelievable and ran totally counter to Labor’s latest Q2 spin of lauding volunteers and their work.

"It’s a bit hard to fathom …on the one hand the government ridiculously axed CPR for Life, a terrific, low-cost program run by volunteers that saved lives …but is now running a costly public relations campaign using taxpayers’ money to tell us that volunteers are wonderful and everyone should be involved.

"I encourage anyone interested in CPR to contact the QAS and or get involved with their local ambulance committees who are looking for all the support they can get."
