LNP racing spokesman Mike Horan today welcomed the ‘Race Fields’ legislation having urged the Bligh government to adopt similar legislation during Parliamentary Estimates hearings in July.

Mr Horan said he advised the Minister responsible for racing, Treasurer Andrew Fraser, that the industry needed it to secure its fair share of wagering turnover.

"Even though it's taken six months we're pleased it's finally being done," Mr Horan said.

He said the legislation was important for two reasons:

To get a fair share of turnover on Queensland codes of racing that goes through internet and corporate bookmaking services that currently make no contribution to racing;

and to protect the ‘gentlemen's agreement’ that has existed between the States, where States haven't charged each other for the use of their racing product.

"Racing depends very heavily on the fee paid for its product by the UNiTAB and it is only fair that anybody else taking advantage of this product should also pay.

"UNiTAB pays their share through the sale agreement that was negotiated when the TAB was sold."

Mr Horan said the LNP would put revenue collected from race fields fees back into the racing industry to provide adequate prizemoney levels in all codes and development and growth.
