Labor MP Tim Mulherin drives up the cost of living for residents of Mackay

Labor MP Tim Mulherin had ignored how high cost of living pressures were hurting local residents by last night voting to increase the cost of car registration, John Kerslake LNP candidate for Mackay said today.

John Kerslake said this showed just how out of touch Labor was with the needs of local residents who were already struggling with soaring costs of living under the Bligh Government.

"Labor's Tim Mulherin had the chance to stand up to this government's endless hits on household budgets - but instead of protecting the people he was voted in by, Labor' Tim Mulherin has failed them," John Kerslake said.

"Under Campbell Newman, an LNP Government will freeze family car registration for its first term to help Queenslanders deal with spiralling cost of living pressures.

"It's time to pull the handbrake on massive increases for everyday essentials," John Kerslake said.

Since 2008, the cost to register an average family car has risen by 32 per cent. It will now cost the average family $805.30 to register a six-cylinder family sedan.

"It's getting harder and harder for Queenslanders, particularly lower and middle income earners, to make ends meet, but Labor just doesn't care," John Kerslake said.

According to the RACQ, Queensland is now the most expensive place to own and operate a motor vehicle anywhere in Australia.

"The people of Mackay simply cannot sustain more hits to their hip pocket," John Kerslake said.

"An LNP Government will save you money and deliver more by getting action on the basics and cutting waste," John Kerslake said.
