The LNP will also set up a Bruce Highway Crisis Management Group to bring state and federal representatives, motoring groups and local authorities under the one tent to drive a concerted campaign to upgrade the Highway.
"Numerous state and federal infrastructure reports have repeatedly highlighted just how bad the Bruce Highway is, and the latest RACQ road safety report confirms what every resident of Mackay knows – the Bruce Highway is a disaster, a daily death trap that's been ignored by Labor for 20 years," John Kerslake said.
"The RACQ estimate that without urgent action, 350 people will die on the Bruce Highway in the next 10 years and more than 5,000 will be injured. This is simply unacceptable and everything must be done to try and stop this carnage.
"For a highway which travels almost the length of our entire state and provides a critical economic link to many communities and businesses its unreliability during rain events and natural disasters must be fixed. Last summer the Bruce Highway was cut in too many places and for far too long," John Kerslake said.
John Kerslake said Labor MP Tim Mulherin has failed to stand up for our region and ignored repeated pleas for action to fix the Bruce Highway.
"Tim Mulherin stood back and watched while the Bligh government allowed their Federal Labor mates to strip $326 million from flood mitigation funding for the Bruce Highway immediately after major flooding last year.
"It was only after a strong campaign mounted by the LNP that most of this money returned back to Queenslanders.
"The Bligh Labor government has failed to stand up for and get fair funding for Queensland roads from the Federal Government. They've also failed to detail any plans for upgrading the Bruce Highway despite being in power for two decades," John Kerslake said.
John Kerslake said the LNP is committed to delivering a better Bruce Highway for local residents and businesses who rely on this critical piece of Queensland's infrastructure.
