Second Southern Corridor Access Petition Already on the Record

A second southern access in to the city of Cairns is a priority and is an indictment of the present Labor government who have refused to consider this important project for the last thirty years, LNP candidate for Mulgrave, Robyn Quick said today.

"As coordinator of the Southern Corridor Action Group, which was formed when plans to demolish some 400 homes and businesses were announced, I have made a second access road a top priority for southern residents since the Bruce Highway Upgrade was announced in 2007. Along with community members, I have been successful in bringing about changes that have protected and preserved some 300 homes," Mrs Quick said.

The Southern Corridor Action group submission to the State Government, which I wrote, outlined very clearly the need for a second corridor and I have been on the public record on many occasions calling for this outcome, " Mrs Quick said. "A petition was signed at this time by over 1100 people and still Labor refused to listen."

"As a member of the Mulgrave Chamber of Commerce, I am pleased that the Chamber continues supports a second access into Cairns," Mrs Quick said. "However the community has already made its feeling quite clear on this matter," she said.

"For Bob Katter to rant and rave in his usual fashion claiming the LNP is somehow responsible for the state of our roads is typical of his bluster, populist slogans, and ignorance of the facts. I might remind Bob Katter that the Labor Party has been in power in Queensland for the last twenty years, that Mr Katter has been the federal member for this area over the same period and it is the federal government which funds national highways. What has he done to fix the problem? Where has he been over the last four years whilst others have been fighting for this important infrastructure. This just smacks of political opportunism," Mrs Quick said.

"As a member of this community I will continue to fight for this second access road, and if elected, as a member of a CanDo LNP government," Mrs Quick said.
