Melissa Hislop of Bardon said Andrew Fraser's "token measure" of Kaye Street noise barriers was an outrage. "I may be less furious if it was part of a bigger plan to restructure the roads, but this does not solve any problems! In fact, it may turn out to be a massive waste of money," Ms Hislop said.
Bardon resident Diana Carlson has opposed the plan for the 3-metre high concrete wall on Kaye Street, and has asked why there simply can't be signs on Boundary Road/Frederick Street (Met Road 5) that prohibit compression brakes being used by trucks.
"Why not try the signs first, rather than cut down trees and erect a giant wall?" Ms Carlson said. "Surely a big concrete wall will just attract even more traffic."
On behalf of a number of local residents, LNP Candidate for Mount Coot-tha, Saxon Rice, has written to the Minister for Main Roads, Craig Wallace, asking for signage to restrict compression braking on the Met 5. Ms Rice sent the letter on November 18 and has yet to hear back from the Minister.(see letter attached).
"The total lack of action by Labor and Andrew Fraser on this issue has caused immense frustration for countless residents who are enduring a daily nightmare with traffic noise and congestion and rat- running through local streets", Ms Rice said.
Saxon Rice is also garnering local residents' signatures on a petition demanding Andrew Fraser honour his long-ago promise to upgrade the intersection.
Seven years ago, local MP, Andrew Fraser promised to prioritise the upgrading of the Bardon intersection – regarded as Brisbane's most inefficient intersection - and in his 2006 election commitment pledged $2 million for its upgrading.
Westside News' coverage of residents growing anger forced Mr Fraser to consider the traffic light sequence at the intersection but due to his disastrous mismanagement of the economy, he claims there are no funds to upgrade the intersection.
"Mr Fraser is all talk and no action. It's little wonder the community is angry."
Ms Rice said neither funding for the intersection upgrade nor the broader transport strategy for the Bardon area has been forthcoming under decades of Labor representation for Mount Coot-tha.
"Under an LNP Government, Campbell Newman and I will take responsibility for State roads and ensure our infrastructure meets the needs of the local community."
