Regarded as Brisbane‟s most inefficient intersection, it can take drivers at least five to six changes of lights and up to eight minutes to get through.
"Rat-running" is rife through the precinct, with residents labelling the traffic congestion "a living misery."
Recent survey results from Austraffic show average weekday traffic of more than 4,400 cars using Cecil Road. Northam Avenue and Simpsons Road are also used as "rat runs‟.
With an agreed upgrade design for the intersection in hand, the local community is angry that two years on there has been no State funding and no improvements at the important intersection.
Frustrated Bardon resident, Geraldine Heron, who has signed the petition for action, says funding for the intersection upgrade is essential. "It‟s a daily nightmare of traffic chaos and rat- running," Ms Heron said. "It‟s simply bewildering why nothing‟s been done despite years of promises."
Another petitioner, Fred Martin of Bardon, says the traffic each morning is "just bedlam." "It‟s little wonder they all rat-run through the back streets to avoid the gridlock of backed up traffic and two sets of lights at that crazy intersection."
Mr Martin said the chicanes through Cecil Road have failed to reduce „rat-running‟ numbers. "In fact, they‟ve made it worse. Thousands of cars still come through there like wildfire," he said. "That intersection‟s got to be upgraded for the sake of all Bardon residents."
Saxon Rice, LNP candidate for Mount Coot-tha, is backing the local community, and plans to present Andrew Fraser with the petition from local residents.
"Over seven years ago in 2004, Mr Fraser promised to prioritise the intersection upgrade in letters to residents," Ms Rice said. "That‟s a ridiculous time warp. Little wonder the community‟s demanding action."
"Over 20 years of a Labor government and local Labor member and residents‟ concerns about the incredible congestion and rat-running in local streets is still being ignored."
"Under an LNP Government, Campbell Newman and I will take responsibility for State roads and ensure our infrastructure meets the needs of the local community."
