The suburbs of Red Hill, Petrie Terrace, Paddington, Bardon, Milton, Auchenflower and Toowong are home to thousands of tertiary students, many of whom are calling on Andrew Fraser - the current state member for the area and Labor's Deputy Leader and Treasurer - to stand up for them against the new tax.
Camilla Ruig, 21 of Auchenflower, says students are being forced to pay for services most don't want or can't use, and political activity they don't approve of.
"I study at Uni, and then work six shifts a week. I don't have the time or opportunity to use the campus' facilities and it's a bit rough that I'm now being forced to pay for them, on top of high uni fees," Ms Ruig said.
Local UQ student, Andrew Dodd, 23, has labelled the tax "compulsory student unionism by stealth" and called on Andrew Fraser to confront former student union leader and Prime Minister Gillard over the new tax for Queensland students.
"I'm not interested in student politics and I don't want to pay this new tax," Mr Dodd said. "I wasn't around back then, but this seems a very 1970's union idea to me."
Saxon Rice, LNP candidate for the seat of Mount Coot-tha, said the new tax is turning the clock back on students.
"There's a huge number of students in this area and they simply can't afford this new tax," Ms Rice said.
"It's time for Andrew Fraser to stand up to his Labor mates in Canberra for the sake of his electorate and all of Queensland's university students."
