It's an unmitigated disaster for our volunteers, as any breaches of workplace laws could result in them facing fines up to $300,000 and up to five years' jail."
As of January 1, any organisation employing at least one worker faces a duty of care to do what is 'reasonably practicable' to prevent injury to themselves and others – and this covers any place where that organisation is 'conducting an undertaking'.
"We've already seen a mass exodus from organisations such as SES and our rural fire brigades from experienced volunteers fed up with harassment from the Bligh government. Any community group, any volunteer-based organisation, no matter what they are doing, sporting, cultural or community safety will be affected." stated Mr Dowling.
