Labor's new safety laws a nightmare for community groups, volunteers and church groups

State Member for Redlands Mr Peter Dowling said today that Labor's new work safety laws could prove an unmitigated disaster for tens of thousands of Queensland volunteers and their organisations – targeting everyone from Local Church groups, Meals on Wheels to Community Volunteers and Scout groups.

Mr Dowling said, "What this long-term Labor government has done is effectively put our church groups, community volunteers groups and all our sporting clubs under Federal workplace laws.

It's an unmitigated disaster for our volunteers, as any breaches of workplace laws could result in them facing fines up to $300,000 and up to five years' jail."

As of January 1, any organisation employing at least one worker faces a duty of care to do what is 'reasonably practicable' to prevent injury to themselves and others – and this covers any place where that organisation is 'conducting an undertaking'.

"We've already seen a mass exodus from organisations such as SES and our rural fire brigades from experienced volunteers fed up with harassment from the Bligh government. Any community group, any volunteer-based organisation, no matter what they are doing, sporting, cultural or community safety will be affected." stated Mr Dowling.

The LNP is committed to safe workplaces through fair and workable laws that provide certainty and we will ensure that commonsense prevails with volunteer organisations.

"The clock is ticking. It's time for a change. It's time to get Queensland back on track."

Peter Dowling is your Member for Redlands.

Peter was born in Leicester, England. His family moved to Australia in 1971, when he was nine years old. On arrival in Brisbane Peter's family settled in Cornubia, located at the southern end of the Redlands electorate.

Peter and his wife Helen have been married for almost 30 years, they have successfully raised two adult children. The couple have been long term residents of Victoria Point, having lived there for nearly 20 years.

Peter left high school to commence an apprenticeship in painting and decorating after completing Grade 10. He then went on to be a painter and decorator for approximately 10 years - working all over Brisbane and the Gold Coast, including on some fairly iconic sites. These included Hyperdome at Logan, Sanctuary Cove, the Breakfast Creek Wharf and others.

After 10 years of swinging a brush Peter thought it was time for something new. Peter took up a labourers job on the railways for a year in NSW before taking up some sales and company representative positions. Peter was first elected Divisional Councillor representing Victoria Point and Coochiemudlo Island in 2000 with the then Redland Shire Council.

His obvious commitment to the region has resulted in local residents re-electing him to the Council again in both 2004 and 2008.

As a Councillor Peter was:

  • Deputy Mayor 2006-2008
  • Chairman – Development Assessment Committee 2002-2006
  • Representative – Water and Waste Committee 2000-2002

Peter is a keen paddler, and takes every opportunity available to get out onto the water. He has also ridden in some charity rides including the Brisbane-Gold Coast 100k challenge. A self-confessed petrol head he admits to enjoying just about every form of motor sport there is. Peter is also a keen angler and a very ordinary golfer.

Peter has a strong record of serving the local community, and over the years this has included involvement in:

  • foundation member of 101FM Radio Logan,
  • SES Mt Tamborine,
  • School P&C associations,
  • NHW,
  • Meals on Wheels,
  • Queensland Cancer Council,
  • Progress Associations,
  • Clean up Australia Days,
