New road rules around schools

State Member for Redlands Mr Peter Dowling today reminded everyone to slow down around School zones, as the 2012 School year commences.

Mr Dowling said, "Changes are being made to make it easier for everyone to remember when to slow down and take extra care when driving around schools.

"All School zone operating times in Queensland will be progressively standardised to 7-9am and 2-4pm, unless specifically signed and signs will be gradually upgraded across the state between January and July 2012."

All day school zones will also be introduced at split campus schools where students need to cross a road to access other buildings or facilities.

Vehicle activated signs in school zones on multi-lane roads will also remind drivers to slow down and observed the school zone speed.

Peter Dowling is your Member for Redlands.

Peter was born in Leicester, England. His family moved to Australia in 1971, when he was nine years old. On arrival in Brisbane Peter's family settled in Cornubia, located at the southern end of the Redlands electorate.

Peter and his wife Helen have been married for almost 30 years, they have successfully raised two adult children. The couple have been long term residents of Victoria Point, having lived there for nearly 20 years.

Peter left high school to commence an apprenticeship in painting and decorating after completing Grade 10. He then went on to be a painter and decorator for approximately 10 years - working all over Brisbane and the Gold Coast, including on some fairly iconic sites. These included Hyperdome at Logan, Sanctuary Cove, the Breakfast Creek Wharf and others.

After 10 years of swinging a brush Peter thought it was time for something new. Peter took up a labourers job on the railways for a year in NSW before taking up some sales and company representative positions. Peter was first elected Divisional Councillor representing Victoria Point and Coochiemudlo Island in 2000 with the then Redland Shire Council.

His obvious commitment to the region has resulted in local residents re-electing him to the Council again in both 2004 and 2008.

As a Councillor Peter was:

  • Deputy Mayor 2006-2008
  • Chairman – Development Assessment Committee 2002-2006
  • Representative – Water and Waste Committee 2000-2002

Peter is a keen paddler, and takes every opportunity available to get out onto the water. He has also ridden in some charity rides including the Brisbane-Gold Coast 100k challenge. A self-confessed petrol head he admits to enjoying just about every form of motor sport there is. Peter is also a keen angler and a very ordinary golfer.

Peter has a strong record of serving the local community, and over the years this has included involvement in:

  • foundation member of 101FM Radio Logan,
  • SES Mt Tamborine,
  • School P&C associations,
  • NHW,
  • Meals on Wheels,
  • Queensland Cancer Council,
