Redlands entities granted funds

State Member for Redlands Peter Dowling confirmed this week that the Government has granted two Redlands' organisations funding towards sport and recreation involvement as part of the Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Program, Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland focus.

"I am pleased to have official confirmation from Minister Phil Reeves, Minister for Child Safety and Minister for Sport, that Redland City Council and the Victoria Point Sharks Sporting Club have both received funding under Round 3 of the Queensland Government's Sport and Infrastructure Program.

"I have campaigned tirelessly to support both of these grant applications, and I also had the chance recently to discuss it with the Minister face-to-face, to discuss positive benefits for these organisations and the community in the Redlands if the funding was approved." said Mr Dowling.

The Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Program supports local communities with the promotion of sport and recreation involvement, by developing appropriate spaces and places for participation to become a healthier and more active community.

"The community will benefit from this funding and I look forward to the Victoria Point Sharks Sporting Club and Redland City Council keeping me updated on the great outcomes these grants will generate for the Redlands."

Peter Dowling is your Member for Redlands.

Peter was born in Leicester, England. His family moved to Australia in 1971, when he was nine years old. On arrival in Brisbane Peter's family settled in Cornubia, located at the southern end of the Redlands electorate.

Peter and his wife Helen have been married for almost 30 years, they have successfully raised two adult children. The couple have been long term residents of Victoria Point, having lived there for nearly 20 years.

Peter left high school to commence an apprenticeship in painting and decorating after completing Grade 10. He then went on to be a painter and decorator for approximately 10 years - working all over Brisbane and the Gold Coast, including on some fairly iconic sites. These included Hyperdome at Logan, Sanctuary Cove, the Breakfast Creek Wharf and others.

After 10 years of swinging a brush Peter thought it was time for something new. Peter took up a labourers job on the railways for a year in NSW before taking up some sales and company representative positions. Peter was first elected Divisional Councillor representing Victoria Point and Coochiemudlo Island in 2000 with the then Redland Shire Council.

His obvious commitment to the region has resulted in local residents re-electing him to the Council again in both 2004 and 2008.

As a Councillor Peter was:

  • Deputy Mayor 2006-2008
  • Chairman – Development Assessment Committee 2002-2006
  • Representative – Water and Waste Committee 2000-2002

Peter is a keen paddler, and takes every opportunity available to get out onto the water. He has also ridden in some charity rides including the Brisbane-Gold Coast 100k challenge. A self-confessed petrol head he admits to enjoying just about every form of motor sport there is. Peter is also a keen angler and a very ordinary golfer.

Peter has a strong record of serving the local community, and over the years this has included involvement in:

  • foundation member of 101FM Radio Logan,
  • SES Mt Tamborine,
  • School P&C associations,
  • NHW,
  • Meals on Wheels,
  • Queensland Cancer Council,
  • Progress Associations,
  • Clean up Australia Days,
