More Labor Rubbish

Dale Shuttleworth, LNP Candidate for Ferny Grove, expressed his surprise and concern that the State Labor government plans, by 1st December 2011, to levy $35 per tonne on commercial and industrial waste.

"This is a retrograde step," Shuttleworth said, "which can only increase the costs to small businesses and to local councils themselves in dealing with rubbish. These increases will inevitably be passed on in increased prices and increased domestic rates to households."

"Queensland already has a 43% recycling rate and no waste crisis. This legislation just imposes needless overheads and will further impair our States economic recovery and increase the cost of living."

"It is well established too that adding this costs will inevitably increase illegal waste dumping thereby placing an avoidable burden of clean-up costs on the local council," he continued.

Mr Shuttleworth added: "Local councillors have spoken to me of their serious concerns of the projected cost increases of $3 million a year in levy payments with another $1 million a year in implementation costs."

"This is yet another example of where an out of touch, Bligh Labor Government implements change without consultation. The LNP sought to have this Bill considered thoroughly under the new committee system, however even this process has been circumvented."

"South-East Queensland Council of Mayors strongly advised that all funds collected from this levy be reserved for waste-related projects and programs. Now, however, it is just another tax to help fill the leaky bucket that is this Labor government's finances."

Dale Shuttleworth concluded: "This tax is yet another example of this debt riddled Bligh Labor government's desperate cash grab at a time when everyone is struggling to make their own budgets balance."
