LNP won't proceed with controversial showground changes

Sports Minister and local member for Mansfield Phil Reeves has failed to get Labor's controversial legislation to mandate gender balance on the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds Trust through Parliament at its last sitting before the election, leaving it as a critical issue of concern to local residents during the election campaign.

In his response to the report of the parliamentary committee which examined the legislation, tabled on Parliament's last sitting day, Mr Reeves indicated he intended to proceed with the controversial changes.

"This bipartisan committee, chaired by Labor, raised serious concerns regarding Mr Reeves and his dealings with the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds Trust and unanimously recommended changes to the bill." LNP candidate for Mansfield Ian Walker said.

Mr Walker said he had spoken to the LNP Shadow Sports Minister David Gibson MP, who was deputy chair of the parliamentary committee, and Mr Gibson had reiterated the LNP's commitment to the parliamentary committee's recommendations.

"The LNP, if elected, will review this legislation to ensure the committee's recommendations are put into effect. Mr Reeve's own ALP colleagues realise he is on the wrong track and the LNP does as well.' Mr Gibson said.
