“People power” saves Mt. Gravatt showgrounds

Published in Metro South Written by Ian Walker

The battle to save the iconic Mt Gravatt showgrounds has been won after a vocal public campaign by locals who lobbied the office of Sports Minister and Member for Mansfield Phil Reeves.

Residents were outraged when Mr Reeves instigated a "review" of the act covering the administration of the showgrounds. Locals saw the move as an attempt by the State Government to seize control from a community-representative group.

Liberal National Party Candidate for Mansfield Ian Walker has called on Sports Minister and local member Phil Reeves to abandon his review of the Mt Gravatt Showgrounds trust.

In his submission to Mr Reeves’ Department, Mr Walker said that the review was “tainted” by Mr Reeves’ hostility towards the Show Society, and its refusal to bow to Mr Reeves’ demand to include a woman as one of the Society’s representatives on the trust.
