Budget blues for North West Queenslanders

Residents of Mount Isa Electorate should steel themselves for bigger household bills this year, due to State Labor's slick Budget swindle, LNP Leader Campbell Newman said today.

"While Labor have given with one hand in this budget, they have taken even more with the other," Mr Newman said.

"The long awaited cut in the ambulance levy has been swamped by higher car registration, petrol, water and electricity prices meaning Queenslanders will be worse off by over $1000 each year.

"Our state's debt will jump to a staggering $85 billion in two years with a weekly interest bill of $100 million per week, or $595,000 each hour," Mr Newman added.

LNP candidate for Mount Isa, Mick Pattel said this wasted money could have been spent on upgrading local health facilities and roads such as mobile medical services and upgrades to our local hospitals. It could have provided extra doctors and nurses for better health outcomes and more teachers and police to deliver better front line services.

"This Budget is a missed opportunity to cement our region's economic future and provides little hope for the people of Mount Isa," Mr Pattel said.

"The $17 billion in proceeds from Labor's fire sale of our publicly owned assets was supposed to slash our debt and cut the cost of living for struggling families – but what's happened to that money?

"State Labor has frittered away billions of dollars of taxpayers' money but where are the improved highways and railway infrastructure needed to expand our region?" Mr Pattel said.

Local construction and tourism industries have also been duped with a 125 per cent increase in stamp duty which will penalise home buyers around Queensland and further stifle our construction industry.

Sadly, Labor's only response to help Queensland's struggling tourism industry is to focus on attracting more events but contains no targeted assistance to local tourism operators.

"Unlike Labor, the LNP will save you money and deliver more by getting action on the basics and cutting waste. Where Labor only offers Queenslanders more debt and waste, the CanDo LNP team offers Queenslanders hope and opportunity." Mick Pattel said.
