Quick to meet with truck drivers

With three recent reports damning the state of the Bruce Highway, LNP candidate for Mulgrave, Robyn Quick, is convening a meeting on Thursday 9 February of trucking contractors' representatives and drivers to discuss their concerns and provide an opportunity for these concerns to be provided to Campbell Newman and the LNP leadership team.

"The Bruce Highway is our major supply artery for Far North Queensland and yet is subject to frequent closures due to flooding, (530 times since 2009  RACQ) and consists of narrow and dangerous bridges,  dangerous stretches including the section between Innisfail and Cairns, identified by the RACQ as among the worst. The volume of traffic has increased fourfold over the last twenty years, with a lack of overtaking or passing lanes and parking bays," Mrs Quick said.

"I have received a number of contacts from hauliers and drivers in the trucking industry who service the Gordonvale to Tully districts in Far North Queensland regarding the state of the Bruce Highway. I am interested in exploring the issues of concern about the Bruce Highway for this area. To this end, I am convening a meeting at Dillon's Tea House on the north bank of the Johnstone River, Innisfail, at 3 pm on  Thursday 9 February. The meeting will take approximately two hours and all those involved in the trucking industry are invited to attend. There is plenty of parking space available."

"Those conducting  a business in this area are invited to participate where matters of concern can be discussed with other members of the industry," Mrs Quick said.

Mrs Quick said that she wished to develop an overall strategy for road use and development in the  region and  input would be most welcome.

"I am also concerned about the proliferation of regulations aimed at the transport industry so experienced staff drivers are invited to attend as well," Mrs Quick said.
