Burnett electorate slugged by the Carbon Tax

LNP candidate for Burnett Stephen Bennett has called on Labor Candidate Stuart Tomlinson to finally admit Labor's carbon tax is bad news for local residents, after the Bligh government was forced to admit there will be a near billion dollar hit on State finances over the next three years.

Mr Bennett said the Bligh government's mid-year budget update exposed an $883 million shortfall from government-owned corporations out to 2014/15, as a result of carbon tax.

"The Bligh government has been forced to admit that an extra $100 million a year would be needed to help government agencies meet the start-up and on-going costs of the carbon tax," he said.

"These costs will take away funding for our already stretched health, education and community in Burnett.

"So much needs to be done to improve hospital and education services, to build the huge backlog of infrastructure such roads, hospitals, schools, but Labor's carbon tax will make it so much harder to deliver these basic services every Queenslander deserves.

"All ALP state members and candidates have enthusiastically supported this tax, a toxic tax which will strip our state finances of a billion dollars, and I am calling on Labor's candidate from Hervey Bay to finally denounce it.

Mr Bennett said the value of Queensland's state assets would plummet under the carbon tax with the state-owned Stanwell Power Station's book value written down by $162.4 million, and CS Energy by $541.2 million.

"What we really need is for the Premier and Mr Tomlinson to explain to local families exactly where the money for this billion dollar hit is going to come from," Mr Bennett said.

"This billion dollar tax slug will further force up the cost of living and local residents simply can't take any more hits to their hip pockets.

"A CanDo LNP government will continue to oppose Labor's job destroying carbon tax.

"It's time for a change. It's time to get Queensland back on track."
