Our schools will be slugged by Labor's carbon tax

Parents already struggling to afford their children's education and associated costs are likely to be hit even harder by Federal Labor's carbon tax which is set to hit our schools, the State Opposition said today.

Shadow Minister for Education Bruce Flegg said both Julia Gillard and Anna Bligh's taxes were increasing our cost of living, including making educating our kids even more expensive.

"State and Federal Labor is really making it tough for already cash-strapped parents," said Dr Flegg.

"Julia Gillard's carbon tax is going to make lighting, computers and technology as well as air-conditioning more expensive to run in our schools and parents are likely to be the ones to foot the bill.

"In just 12 months our schools will be hit with their first astronomical electricity bill and parents need to brace themselves for another Labor hip-pocket hit," he said.

Dr Flegg said over the past few years the price of electricity in our state schools had already increased under the Bligh Government by fifty per cent from $24.85 million in 2005-2006 to $37.38 million in 2009-10 and they were set to get even more expensive because of Federal Labor's carbon tax being introduced next financial year.

"Already some Queensland students are suffering because of Labor - with reports North Queensland school students are being forced to sit sweltering through their lessons without air conditioning as their school tries to minimise costs associated with the carbon tax," he said.

"It's no wonder Queensland Council of Parents and Citizens Association northern vice-president Mick Cutler reportedly fears principals may put pressure on the P&C Associations to find additional funds to supplement their budgets.

"Even our Victorian counterparts recently attacked Federal Labor for making public school power bills almost $5 million a year more expensive as of next year.

"And what is this 20-year-old Labor government doing to help our school communities?  Nothing.  Instead they're publicly supporting their Federal Labor mates' tax that will cause more stress to struggling Queensland students and their parents," Dr Flegg said.

Dr Flegg said the Bligh Government's Minister for Education Cameron Dick was unable to offer Queensland parents any comfort during budget estimates recently when he confessed the Bligh government had done no financial modelling on the tax's impact on Queensland's state schools.

"I can assure Queensland parents the LNP will fight Federal Labor's carbon tax.

"The CanDo team will give a strong voice to school communities throughout Queensland.

"An LNP Government will oppose the carbon tax all the way and work for Queensland not for ourselves," Dr Flegg said.
