The clock is ticking on the election countdown

The LNP today launched a countdown to the date that the 2012 election is due.

LNP Leader Campbell Newman said March 24 is the date that the Bligh government's three years is up.

"That means that from today there are 70 days until time runs out to hold an election," Mr Newman said.

"The LNP has been calling for the government to stop the speculation and rumours and call the election so that Queenslanders can have a say about the past and the future.

"A number of ministers are already in retirement mode, and are counting down to the day that they can finally distance themselves from this tired, 20 year old Labor administration."

Mr Newman warned Queenslanders that Labor would say and do anything to hold on to power in Queensland.

"Labor cannot be trusted.  At the last election they kept their asset sell-off agenda secret until after the election – and then sold off Queensland Rail and timber plantations.

"No Queenslander could forget that they also lied about the fuel tax, wiping out the eight cent per litre discount shortly after regaining their stranglehold on Queensland politics in 2009."

Mr Newman said despite the underhanded asset sales, under Labor the state's debt has continued to skyrocket - it's racing towards $85 billion, with interest payments alone at $600,000 every hour of every day of every week of every month.
