A stronger economy guarantees the essential services that you and your family rely on. Higher taxes will slow you and the economy down which is why the Liberal National Government is committed to keeping taxes low and the economy strong.

Bill’s Higher Taxes Tour

Bill Shorten’s behaviour this week has demonstrated again what is at risk for Australians if he ever becomes Prime Minister.

It’s been a week full of lies, empty promises and announcements for projects that the LNP has already funded and started work on.

Shorten started his bus tour by completely neglecting the Gold Coast region before travelling north to lie about funding cuts to the Bruce Highway and health services in regional areas. Queenslanders know that Labor can’t run an economy. You can’t properly fund health and education if you introduce $200 billion in new taxes, unemployment goes up and more people are forced onto welfare.

Under the Liberal National Government, taxes have gone down making it easier for families to deal with the cost of living. Investment in roads, bridges, dams, health and education have gone up. We can’t afford to go back to the dark years of the Rudd and Gillard Governments.

It’s up to us as members to make sure our friends and families know the risks that Shorten and Labor pose to the prosperity and security of Australia.

Deb’s Queensland Report

This week I met Townsville resident Maureen Dougherty.

The 84-year-old sadly became one of the countless victims of crime in the region when thieves broke into her home and stole her father’s WW1 medals on Sunday.

Townsville residents don’t feel safe in their own homes and are demanding action in the face of horrific rates of theft, violence and juvenile crime.

Burdekin MP Dale Last and I met with community members and laid out our plan to reverse these crime rates.

An LNP Government I lead would deliver the extra police and stronger laws that north Queensland communities deserve.

Voters need to back LNP candidates to keep their streets safe in 2020 and end Labor’s wall-to-tall representation in Townsville.

But the crime nightmare isn’t only happening in North Queensland.

A night doesn’t go by when we don’t see a Queenslander affected by crime on the TV.

The LNP will always put the safety of the community first by being tough on crime because Queenslanders like Maureen have had enough.

The ABS also released the latest jobs figures this week, which showed Queensland has the second highest unemployment rate in the nation.

Queenslanders are crying out for jobs, particularly up north.

Infrastructure and investment are crucial to turning our unemployment around.

But instead of getting on with the job-creating Carmichael coal mine project, Labor seem to be doing everything they can to undermine it.

This week’s revelation that Labor has hand-picked an environmental assessor who opposes the mine is staggering.

This is an extraordinary departure from normal process and the deck now seems stacked against the project. Desperately needed jobs are at risk.

A government I lead would back job-creating projects, get out of the way of businesses, and create confidence to invest in Queensland.

I also caught up with Coomera MP Michael Crandon on Thursday to talk about the LNP’s big commitments to bust congestion.

The South East Queensland Council of Mayors identified the second M1 as a priority this week – a project I have committed to fast track if we win the election.

The M1 has been a car park in the holidays and we’re expecting even more jams this Australia Day weekend.

Busting congestion is a key pillar of the LNP’s Economic Plan and we back the Second M1, M1 upgrades, new road corridors, Brisbane Metro and the Sunshine Coast rail duplication.

The Australia Day long weekend also means a new school year is upon us.

Media reports this week highlighted the divide created by Labor’s ‘cooler schools zone’, where schools south of Gladstone must fend for themselves to fund air-conditioning.

I know temperatures in Ipswich classrooms can be just as hot as classrooms in Charters Towers.

I don’t want to send our kids into classroom ovens on their first day of school. That’s why I have committed to air-condition every state-school classroom in Queensland.

We wouldn’t treat our kids and teachers differently depending on where they live.

Delivering air-con to all classrooms with will not only improve learning outcomes for our kids but will provide a more comfortable environment for our teachers and principals as well.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable Australia Day and get get the chance to spend time with family and friends over the long weekend.
