About Chris

Chris Bonanno knows the people of Mackay and he’s proud of what they do.
With firsthand knowledge of the industries which drive our local economy he also stands ready to be the vocal champion the region needs.

Chris has worked in both the sugar and mining industries, and he has also spent many years working with the city’s business community. He did his trade as a Fitter and Turner at Pioneer Sugar Mill in the Burdekin and went on to do mine shutdown work in the Bowen Basin.

He later moved into the world of media sales and management and for the last 3 years, has been the General Manager of Star 1019 FM, 4MK and Kix Country.

Chris is passionate about safety, whether in our community or on our roads, and he has been heavily involved in organisations such as Crime Stoppers, Mackay City Safe and the Road Accident Action Group over many years.

He is a recipient of Rotary’s highest honour – the Paul Harris Fellow, and was named Mackay Community Leader of the Year in 2016 by the Australian Institute of Management.

Chris has contributed his knowledge and enthusiasm to a number of community events and activities including initiating the popular Italian Street Party and the Duck Derby (Rotary & Lifesavers fundraiser), running the Moranbah Home Show for 9 years, and working on committees for both the Mackay Show Association and the Mackay Turf Club.

A four-year term on Mackay Regional Council also gave him invaluable insight into both the city’s strengths and its challenges.

Championing Mackay’s strengths, keeping our coal jobs, making our city safe and securing our farm future will be his focus as a proud member of Deb Frecklington’s LNP team.

Looks like Scottie's done the numbers on time saved for those northside taking the new Ring Road to Paget. 8 minutes 👍 And the view's better 👍 #mackaymatters #mackayringroad ... See MoreSee Less

I drove it yesterday, thought I was going blind as I could not see an exit at Racecourse going north. But I did see four cop cars on the leg from south end Bruce Highway roundabout to the Stockroute Rd roundabout, as this section is 80k, the next leg going to the Glenella end is 100k. Bit sneaky, watch your speed.

Crazy why an exit wasn't planned at Racecourse connector from both directions

Looking forward to taking a spin on our new Mackay Ring Road? It's opening to traffic about noon. Special day for our city. Congrats to all who worked hard to make this happen. You know who you are. #mackaymatters #Roadsafety #transport ... See MoreSee Less

It’s great to see it’s open. Shame there was no community opening where the public could celebrate this important milestone for Mackay.

When are they starting the Marian bypass
