Schrinner Council begins planned burn season

1 April 2026

The Schrinner Council has begun Brisbane’s planned burn season, with the first burn to commence at Mount Crosby Road Park in Anstead today.

Favourable conditions have provided an opportunity for crews to safely reduce fuel loads across 7.8 hectares of bushland in Anstead to help prepare the city for bushfire season.

Our Council manages more than 10,000 hectares of bushland across Brisbane and is assessing 52 potential sites for planned burns this year, depending on weather conditions.

Other locations will be announced in due course and will be prioritised according to each site’s fire risk.

In 2025, more than 400 hectares of bushland was treated through the city’s planned burn program.

Planned burns have been conducted across more than 2,000 hectares of bushland since 2018.

We currently have 80 active fire-trained firefighters ready to undertake planned burns and assist relevant agencies if a bushfire occurs.

We also operate 20 four-wheel drive light attack firefighting units to support rapid response efforts.

Planned burns are a critical tool to reduce fire hazards known as fuel loads, comprising build-ups of sticks, leaves, and groundcover.

Reducing these fuel loads helps limit the intensity and spread of future bushfires.

Our investment in bushfire preparedness also includes the following:

  • fire trail construction
  • fire management plans
  • vegetation management
  • fire access track and trail management

Residents living in planned burn zones can limit smoke in their homes by closing their windows.

They can also prepare for bushfire season by ensuring they have an updated bushfire preparedness plan and tidying their yards, clearing their gutters and property of branches, twigs, and foliage.
Locals with respiratory and other health conditions should make early arrangements to prepare for smoke exposure.

The Schrinner Council will notify the community of planned burns ahead of time via Community Service Announcements.
